Lola Murphy

Service No: NF451942
Service: AWAS
Place of Birth: Crookwell
Highlights: Lola is the younger sister of Merle Holland nee Murphy. She enlisted on 16 Feb 1943 aged 19 years. Lola was a stenographer before enlisting and after attending initial training at Ingleburn she went to Clerical School for 2 weeks before being posted to 2 Aust Training Depot in Bathurst on 27 Mar 1943. On 31 May she was transferred to Army HQ in Sydney to work in the Legal Branch as a stenographer, where she was promoted to CPL on 2 Sept 1943 and attached to the Legal Office in Bathurst. On 31 Jan 1944, Lola was transferred to Sydney Coast Artillery, before being transferred out to HQ Newcastle Fort. Lola was transferred to Signals School Bonegilla on 27 Sep 1944, before being transferred back to HQ Second Aust Army in Sydney on 23 Oct 1945. It would appear that Lola was working as a stenographer at the Legal Sections of each of these units. Lola’s final posting on 4 Jan 1946 was to Joint Chiefs of Staff Australia (JCOSA) which had their HQ in Melbourne. This was during the time that Australia’s contribution to British Commonwealth Occupation Force, Japan was being put together and moved to Japan. As well as the Australian Joint Chiefs, there were high ranking representatives of UK, NZ, Canadian and Indian military forces in this organisation. Lola worked at this unit until discharge on 12 Jun 1946, when she returned her parent’s home in Forbes.
