Highlights: Vera enlisted on 15 Apr 1942, aged 21 yrs. She had been a waitress at the Niagra Café for 5 years prior to enlisting. After completing basic training in Preston Vic, was posted to RAAF Station Bradfield Park, Lindfield Sydney, for Mess Steward training and then as staff. Posted to RAAF Station Tocumwal on 10 Feb 1943, and was promoted to CPL on 1 Dec 1943. Vera returned to Bradfield Park for discharge on 1 Mar 1946, after which she returned to her parent’s home in Cowper Street, Crookwell. Vera married John Samuel Hughes in Sydney in 1959 and in 1996 was living on Bribie Island, QLD.
